ECR Visual Arts at CSUN

El Camino’s Visual Arts Department was represented in the 22nd High School Invitational held at CSUN on January 18th.  El Camino’s art students, Sam Helton, Catheryn Cowings, Sierra Denney, Nikko Castaneda, Giang Le, and Taylor Freas were featured in the exhibit.  The event showcased selected work made by students from over thirty San Fernando Valley high schools, in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, illustration, and photography, among others. In conjunction with the High School Invitational, the West Gallery featured the work of the high school art teachers.  Our Graphic Design teacher, Mrs. Nicholson, had her artwork represented in this gallery.  Congratulations El Camino’s Visual Arts Department!

Casting Call

It’s break, and I think we all need it!  But the show must go on, and we will continue to develop our VAPA Academy in this time!

What great performances by all of our groups before finals…it was a blast seeing everyone shine on their various stages!  The choirs caroled the halls to relieve stress as finals approached.

Finally, the producer of a student film called “The Cleaner” is looking for actors!  Check out the flyer below!  And have a restful winter break!

What a Week for VAPA!

It was a busy week…so busy, that I haven’t had a chance to post in a bit. But here are the highlights!

On October 30th, Mr. Thurow’s orchestra and jazz band put on a joint Halloween concert. They were amazing! Orchestra played some timeless classics, like Vivaldi’s Winter movement from The Four Seasons, and some more modern works, including This is Halloween by Danny Elfman. Jazz band rocked the stage, including some favorites like Watermelon Man and Sing, Sing, Sing in their set. Nice job to all the musicians – really well done!

This weekend was a busy one for VAPA – three competitions all on Saturday! Our choral and instrumental programs worked together to time their performance slots in order to allow 5 members to make it from the Hart Rampage Field Tournament in the morning to the Choral Magic Choir Competition in the afternoon, and back again! Thanks to the determination of those 5 students and a kindhearted mom who drove them, neither group had to compromise. We do our best to let our VAPA students participate in more than one emphasis whenever we can.

Marching Band and Dance Guard had competitions two weekends in a row! At Hart Rampage at College of the Canyons, they got their highest scores yet and placed 2nd in their division. And the previous weekend at the Simi Valley HS Band Spectacular, Percussion won 1st place in their division, Band won Sweepstakes in their division and Dance Guard won Overall Sweepstakes!

20181104_034548680_iOSCamerata and Women’s Choir also performed well at the Choral Magic Choir Competition at Magic Mountain. They both placed 3rd in their categories.  Women’s Choir rated Excellent, and Camerata rated Superior! And their amazing accompanist, Charlotte Knorzer, won a special Outstanding Accompanist award…nice job to all!
